Romans 6: 1-14

alliewhitt:

We face sin everyday, despite whether or not we have been baptized a Christian.  Something, whether it’s a treacherous tongue, lust, negativity, etc., fights with us to take root in our lives and separate us from Christ.  This passage speaks specifically to those who have made a profession of faith and established a relationship with Christ, but I also want to speak to those who may be trying to figure out where they stand with this religion.

When you are baptized, Paul says that your old self, your sinful self, will then be crucified with Christ, that we will be “buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life” (vs. 4).  This means that we have been freed from our sin, separated from it, given a fresh start.  That doesn’t mean that it isn’t going to put up a fight to regain its hold on us, but it may come back even stronger.  After accepting Christ into our lives, we turn our backs on that sin.  Yeah, we’ll fall every now and again - one slip up isn’t sending us straight to Hell.  We have to get back up and break the grip that sin has on us instead of giving in.  It’s difficult to control sin in our lives, but isn’t it worth fighting your whole life and obtaining eternity in Heaven than to give up “like a dog returning to his vomit or a fool to his folly” (Proverbs 26:11) and only gain the fires of Hell?  I’d rather put up the fight.

“Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, to make you obey its passions.  Do not present your members to sin as instruments for unrighteousness, but present yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life, and your members to God as instruments for righteousness.  For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace” (vs. 12-14).

Tonight, I’m speaking to baptized Christians and to those who are considering beginning a relationship with Christ.  To those who haven’t made that decision yet, just know that becoming a Christian doesn’t take away all your problems, that you will still struggle with temptation and addiction and the hardships of the world; but if you are willing to fight away these sins and leave them behind, you will not only have the help from Christ but also your brothers and sisters in Him to pull you through.  To both Christians and non-Christians, I encourage you to fight with everything you have.  Don’t be disheartened if you lose a battle from time to time - just get up and be ready to fight again.  There is a victory in sight.

This is what I needed to hear.
